A Word from the Head

There is an infectious vibrancy and energy at the City of London School for Girls. Its distinctive location in the Barbican Centre provides immediate access to the myriad of educational and cultural opportunities available in the heart of London. More importantly the teaching staff and the girls imbue the place with a sense of happiness, purpose, enthusiasm and fulfilment.

A school for girls aged 7 to 18, “City” is unique; the rich, social and cultural blend of our pupils, reflects the cosmopolitan character of London itself. We welcome girls from all over Greater and Outer London, offering a number of academic scholarships and bursaries in order to maintain the diversity which we value so highly. All around us the traditions and landmarks of London’s history are interwoven with the high-tech, dynamic culture of the City. We have galleries, museums, libraries and theatres almost on our doorstep, along with all the other resources of an international centre of commerce. Our pupils have access to the very best that London has to offer.

Achieving academic excellence is a goal for every girl here, but so too is developing individual talents and interests. City is an exciting place to be; we encourage girls to broaden their horizons. We host a wide range of eminent speakers, and girls are able to participate in a variety of performing arts and expeditions and to try new sports and activities. Our programme of Community Service, our thriving participation in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and our partnerships with London state schools and colleges all help the girls to develop personal responsibility and respect for others.

Visit us and you will find that City girls are independent, articulate and confident; they are also friendly, practical and down to earth. Our pupils have a keen appreciation of moral values, a lively sense of purpose and a justified pride in themselves. They are encouraged to make a positive contribution and when they leave us they are well equipped for university and thereafter to assume fulfilling careers, and to play a leading role at home or abroad in whichever sphere they choose.

I hope that you will come and visit us in order to discover first hand just what makes City so different and so special. I very much look forward to meeting you.

Yvonne Burne, Headmistress
