Merton House School is an independent preparatory school, catering for the needs of children aged 2½ -11. The School is housed in a Grade II listed building in a quiet residential area, close to the centre of the City of Chester.
At Merton House School the majority of our pupils are destined to sit entrance examinations to senior schools at the age of eleven. Preparation for these examinations begins in the Infant department. We believe strongly that a child’s education should be broad, balanced, challenging, well structured and interesting. Our children reach the required standard in English, Mathematics and Reasoning without sacrificing creativity and enjoyment.
At Merton House every child is important and we appreciate our children for their individual qualities. Children’s needs are diverse, and providing for them is part of our school’s culture. High academic standards set for all pupils are balanced by encouraging each child to make the most of his or her abilities. Equally important is the development of each child’s character. Imaginations are stimulated, a sense of fun nurtured and good manners and a sense of self-discipline fostered.
The ICT curriculum at Merton House acknowledges the growing presence of computing and ICT in all stages of education and beyond into the workplace. We believe that by establishing many of these vital skills and routines at an earlier age the students at Merton House will have a significant advantage. Our ICT facilities are expanding with new technology as it arrives in the market place. Each classroom has its own computer linked into the school’s wireless broadband network. The children’s ICT lessons take place in the dedicated computer suite.
Another area of specialism is swimming. Every child from Form 1 upwards swims once a week throughout the year. We compete regularly in galas against local schools with great success. For the last eight years we have qualified for the finals of the English Schools Swimming Competition and have sent a team to compete in Sheffield. We have always finished in the top twenty small schools in England and Wales and last year won the category.
After-school clubs are provided every evening and some lunchtimes. Activities include technology, art, music, tennis, football, netball, drama, French, Spanish and choir.
At Merton House School we are ambitious for our pupils in all aspects of their school lives. We strive to see them fulfil their potential, contribute to school life and develop as people sharing concern for others, good manners and a sense of social responsibility.
