Cheltenham College is an independent co-educational school for pupils aged 13 to 18 years. The school is predominantly boarding although day places are also offered.
The first priority at the College is that pupils should be stretched academically and intellectually: it is very important that they are well prepared for public examinations and their eventual university courses and careers. However, this is not at the expense of other accomplishments. Great importance is attached to every aspect of their educational experience – academic, sporting, cultural and spiritual. Boys and girls here should have the opportunity to develop their many and varied talents as fully as possible.
Academic standards are high with 100% GCSE pass rate with 50% gaining A* and A grades and an A Level pass rate with 74% gaining A or B grade in 2007. A very high proportion of the pupils go on to University with 13 Oxbridge places gained for 2008.
There are fine facilities for sports and games with high standards achieved. The main sports offered include Rugby, Hockey, Cricket, Netball, Rowing and Tennis. Music is also strong and plays a large part in the lives of many pupils. Regular drama productions form further evidence of the plentiful range of cultural activities: clubs and societies thrive giving a stimulating educational environment.
Currently there are 600 pupils at the school of whom approximately two thirds are boarding. Main entry is at 13. Candidates are invited to complete a questionnaire about themselves and attend a pre-assessment in Spring Year 7. Guaranteed places will be offered whenever possible subject to, but with the expectation of, passing Common Entrance. There is also direct entry into the Sixth Form for able boys and girls, subject to gaining 5 Bs at GCSE or above.
The school was established in 1841 and occupies a fine site close to the centre of Cheltenham, in the heart of the Cotswolds. Handsome Victorian buildings in gardens and playing fields provide a beautiful setting, which, following many developments and modernisations over recent years, provides excellent facilities. The school is a Church of England foundation with Chapel playing a central role in school life: however pupils of all faiths are welcomed.
There are seven boarding houses all offering exceptional facilities and a friendly place to live. The three day houses also offer excellent facilities and a real sense of belonging to the school.
Cheltenham College is committed to providing academic excellence and educational breadth within a framework of a traditional Christian community.
