Founded in 1900, The Downs is a co-educational day and boarding school for pupils aged between 3 months and 13 years. Situated four miles to the west of Malvern in 55 acres of beautiful grounds, our rural site allows the school to be arranged in three distinct departments: Brockwood Nursery and Kindergarten, Junior (Pre-Prep) and Main (Preparatory). This allows the children to enjoy a safe and secure environment for each age group and the opportunity to progress through the school on a single site where they feel at home.

The Downs provides a richly diverse education, supplementing the National Curriculum with high quality social, cultural and sporting experiences. With over fifty hours of contact time each week and class sizes averaging 15, staff and children work closely together to achieve their targets. The vast majority of children proceed to the senior school of their choice, with many achieving scholarships and awards each year.

Music, Drama, Art and French are extensively integrated into the curriculum, together with a strong emphasis on Physical Education. This gives a breadth and diversity to each school day, and plays to all the possible strengths of each child.
As children progress through the Main School, they are encouraged to take more responsibility for their learning, and their contribution to school life. They grow to understand their importance in the community, both through instruction and example. This provides them with a strong platform, from which they can confidently move into their senior school as independent, self-reliant individuals.

Our boarders are in the care of the resident House Parents who are non-teaching, professional boarding staff, and are supported by a resident boarding team. The dormitories are bright and airy with modern furnishings and the medical centre is homely and child-friendly, with 24-hour supervision.

We are very careful not to measure children by academic achievement alone, nor do we measure children against each other. Effort, enthusiasm and conduct are highly esteemed and the resulting growth in confidence is often the key to unlocking other accomplishments. In short, whilst learning to work with and understand others, The Downs also exists to build and secure self confidence in every child, so that all may progress as far as their capabilities and dreams will take them.

We hold regular open days, but you and your children are always welcome to visit by appointment. Your visit will allow you to see our pupils at work, meet our staff and experience the unique atmosphere of The Downs School.
