Hatherop Castle School is a mixed preparatory day and boarding school for children between the ages of 2.5 and 13, preparing them for Common Entrance and Scholarship Examinations for Senior School entry. Boarders are admitted from the age of 7 into a family-run boarding house with caring and experienced staff. The curriculum covers a wide range of subjects and the classes are deliberately kept small.
The aim of the school is to help each child fulfil his or her academic potential and become a considerate and caring young person. The school prides itself on its friendly atmosphere, and set in the beautiful Cotswold countryside, Hatherop Castle School offers an education based on traditional values joined with modern techniques and up-to-date teaching.
ICT skills and technology are taught from 5 and French from Nursery. Latin is taught from age 8. The Wordsworth Room is well equipped for children with learning difficulties or those who are working ahead. They receive individual tuition from specially qualified staff.
Sport is taught by the Director of Sport from the Transition stage in Nursery. Children, from an early age learn the skills needed to play school sports at a competitive level later on. There is a full sports fixture list for all pupils and regular inter-house and school events, such as Sports Day and Swimming Gala. New changing rooms, with showers, will be open at the end of the Michaelmas term 2008.
The Prep School has its own Nursery School located securely within its own area and where the children enjoy the benefits of a self-contained unit, but having access to and therefore the resources of the whole school.
The School has a strong music and drama department and regular concerts and productions are held. The school has three choirs with children from Prep 2 having a choir of their own. Children can learn any musical instrument and are encouraged to join the School orchestra as soon as they are able. A large musical production always takes place in the summer term. During the school year the children have the opportunity to perform in over thirty musical and dramatic events. The art studio and gallery houses regular displays by the children.
As well as children gaining academic scholarships others are regularly gained in music, drama, art and sport. Facilities at the school are complimented by the recently refurbished ICT suite, separate reference and fiction libraries and 2 science laboratories. An outside classroom which will be used as a fantastic teaching resource is due for completion in late Spring 2009.
