A Word from the Head

Abberley Hall is a boarding school for boys and girls aged 7 to13+. We also have a number of day pupils and a Pre-prep Department of boys and girls aged 2+ to 7+ attending on a daily basis.

Class sizes are small, averaging 11 pupils. Most disciplines have their own subject rooms and there are two science laboratories. Specialist facilities for computing, DT, music and PE allow these subjects to be integrated into the timetable. Pupils are prepared for all public schools, taking Common Entrance, Winchester Entrance or Scholarship exams. The majority of our leavers go on to Eton, Harrow, Malvern, Shrewsbury, Winchester, Cheltenham Ladies and Malvern Girls School.

Arts and crafts hold a central position in school life. The director of music runs two chapel choirs, an orchestra and class music as well as organizing lessons and practices for the large number of individual instrumentalists. Art, DT and woodwork are popular throughout the school. Pupils' confidence in performing in public is built up through large-scale plays, musicals, recitations and speech prizes. All pupils take part in the major sports, an Astroturf pitch provides opportunities for hockey, and there are facilities for swimming in the new indoor swimming pool, golf, croquet, riding, fishing, archery, shooting, Ricochet and climbing. Our school teams enjoy wide ranging success. During the daily activities hour, pupils opt for a wide range of hobbies.

The school has its own chalet in the French Alps where children spend two three-week periods whilst at Abberley. The children are totally immersed into the French language and the French culture. The chalet is also used for skiing holidays.

Overall we hope to achieve an informal and friendly approach to life, and combine this with the discipline which enables pupils to achieve their full potential. We look to the needs of each pupil as an individual and encourage success both in and out of the classroom. This is made possible through the devotion of an exceptional staff.
