A Word from the Head

Westholme's Nursery, Infant and Junior departments are on four sites. They retain a traditional atmosphere with the benefits of modernised and generously proportioned resource space.

The Nursery at Westholme is the youngest in our family of schools. Open for Girls and Boys aged 2- 3 years, it strives to develop the foundation on which children build their skills for life. Our architect designed nursery is an imaginatively adapted bungalow set within its own grounds, located next to Westholme Middle and Boy’s School. The Nursery is a safe and well equipped environment for our youngest pupils who will then proceed to join our pre school class at Billinge House.

Children in the Infant department at Billinge House develop their talents through a structured programme, based on an enhanced National Curriculum. Positive attitudes to learning are fostered through interactive teaching approaches. There is a firm foundation in English, Mathematics and Science, but emphasis is placed upon the development of imaginative skills and enquiring minds.

Some 40 children enter the purpose-built Pre School department in the September following their third birthday. An additional 12 children are admitted in Reception and thereafter are organised as two forms of 26 children throughout the school.

All children are assessed against national criteria as they enter Reception and take the SATs tests at the end of Key Stage 1.

At this stage the girls progress to the Middle School at Beardwood Bank and the boys progress to Westholme School for Boys at Beardwood House, where they can stay until the end of Key Stage 2 at age 11.

The girls are organised into two form groups of 26, the additional pupils having entered in the September following their seventh birthday, whilst the boys are organised into one form. At 11 the boys transfer to a school of their choice.

At 11 pupils take the national Key Stage 2 tests, and the girls move up to the Senior School, details of which are given separately.

Music and sport feature strongly in the busy extra curricular programme. Pupils enjoy use of the Senior School facilities such as the sports field and swimming pool, and the school's netball, cross-country, swimming, rounders and athletics teams achieve considerable success. The school has its own choir, orchestra and brass band and has additional practice rooms for instrumental lessons. Specialist teaching supports both sport and music.

Technology has a high profile in school with a computer suite which is networked to computers in classrooms, library and the hall. Electronic whiteboards have replaced blackboards in every classroom, bringing exciting new dimensions to learning opportunities.

Small, well-resourced and self-contained as they are, all the schools provide a friendly, caring atmosphere for pupils in the early stages of their education, ensuring that they find security and happiness in settings where the highest academic standards can be achieved.
