A Word from the Head

Westholme School was founded in 1923 and is proud of the achievements of its pupils, past and present. The emphasis in the school is upon the individual. Westholme provides a caring and supportive environment in which each girl may find her own strengths, be valued, and look with confidence to her future.

Leading to GCSE and Advanced level, the curriculum is broad based and draws upon the traditional and the new: pupils achieve high standards in Information Technology as well as in numeracy and literacy. Most pupils study ten subjects at GCSE from a possible 21 and progress to the Sixth Form where they will take four AS subjects followed by four or three A2s (chosen from 24 on offer). The Sixth Form offers the students many ways of broadening their experience beyond the confines of A level such as work-shadowing, Young Enterprise, public speaking, industrial links and interview training. In addition there are opportunities within the House and Prefect systems for them to develop leadership skills.

The school offers superb facilities. Six new science laboratories were opened in 1993 and practical subjects including Information Technology are housed in purpose-built accommodation. A new library incorporating a Languages Suite and free access computers opened in September 1999 and is equipped with the latest technology and full multi-media. The swimming pool, sports hall, all-weather tennis courts and sports field support a very successful PE Department gaining a Sportsmark Gold Award in 2004. The superb Theatre and Assembly Hall, seating 720 and offering professional-level facilities for performances, was opened in September 1997. New Sixth Form accommodation with purpose built lecture theatre, classrooms, common room and café was opened in September 2003. We will begin construction on our new All Weather Sports Pitch in Summer 2008 - this will greatly enhance our already superb sporting facilities.

Westholme has a deserved reputation in music and drama and some of its students have received national recognition in choirs, orchestras and television. The school choir tours in Europe in the summer.

Most Westholme girls will go on to Higher Education (98%), a significant proportion to Oxbridge. Beyond that they take with them the communication skills, adaptability and excellent education which will make them eminently employable in a changing world.

* School Bursaries available at eleven plus and sixteen plus
* School coach service operating throughout the catchment area
* Annual Open Day in October.

Westholme also has a new initiative in the form of a dedicated Development Office, led by former old girl Vivienne Davenport. She is responsible for forging stronger links with former pupils and friends of the school. We have an actual former pupils association – ‘Westholmians’ Association’ with regular events throughout the year. The school welcomes news from former pupils.
