Heathland is a private school in Accrington, Lancashire. The school was founded in September 1994 and boasts an excellent reputation as a traditional caring school interested in developing the whole child. The school is housed in an old mansion with extensive grounds where children from the age of 3 months to 16 years can be educated.
We keep class sizes small and all children develop their academic skills to the highest level. We also recognise the value of socialising and developing character. Children throughout the school benefit from the feeling of being part of a large family. We have an enthusiastic Parents Association which works with the school to ensure that the children are supported throughout their school life.

Centrally located in the heart of East Lancashire: The school is situated in a large country mansion set in 5 acres of landscaped grounds, right in the heart of East Lancashire.
School history: Heathland can be found at ‘Broad Oak’, Sandy Lane, Accrington (Accrington means ring of Oaks). The site took its name from an old oak tree in the grounds with a reputed 27 foot circumference. The original tree blew down in 1814 and a replacement tree was planted from an original acorn. Broad Oak House was built in 1802 by Mr John Hargreaves and in 1890, a Miss Wilson took the house and founded a school for ‘young ladies’. In 1897 the school closed and Mr MacAlpine purchased the site and demolished the old house. The present mansion house was built in 1900 and the original architect’s plans can be seen in the reception hall of the school.
In 1949 Lancashire County Council acquired the site as a home for 27 children and later the house was used as a home for the elderly. The present owners, Mr and Mrs Harrison opened Heathland School (formerly known as Heathland College) as an independent, co-educational establishment in 1994.
