A Word from the Head

At Bury Grammar School Girls we aim to provide the best education and we expect every pupil to fulfil her potential. Our emphasis is upon the individual. Whether she joins the school at 11 or the sixth form at 16, every girl will become a part of a lively and happy community where each individual is known, where young people’s opinions are heard and their achievements in all areas of school life positively acknowledged.

Our broad academic curriculum allows students to develop their abilities in Years 7 – 9 and then to capitalise upon them by playing to their strengths at GCSE and A level . From Year 7 the three sciences are taught separately, all in recently refurbished and fully equipped laboratories. We offer three Modern Foreign languages and plenty of practical subjects. Annual cross-curricular projects in each of these three years ensure that students appreciate that their learning has many applications and help to prepare them for life beyond school.

We believe that art, performance in both music and drama and sport are very important in creating well-rounded individuals and our students have achieved outstanding success in these areas. A strong extra-curricular programme helps our pupils to gain confidence and to discover new abilities. We are delighted with their achievements but also believe that enjoyment and enthusiasm are every bit as important.

The school is very well resourced and the governors are committed to providing the best facilities. The school has a sports hall and gym and shares its swimming pool with the Boys’ School. In addition to the ten science laboratories, there are also specialist rooms for design technology, textiles and home economics as well as for music and art. The main building dates from 1903. It has been modernised and there are many additions but it has at its centre an assembly hall where the best traditions are upheld and where musical and dramatic productions reach the highest standards.

The great majority of our students progress to the sixth form and then move on to top university places, a significant proportion of which are at Oxford and Cambridge.
The school is highly regarded in the local community of Bury and indeed throughout Greater Manchester and South East Lancashire and its reputation is such that many students travel from further afield either using public transport (the school is close to the main bus-tram interchange) or school coach. The School is multi-cultural and pupils come from many different backgrounds. Once at school they are all expected to work hard, play hard and achieve their best.
