Loreto Preparatory School, founded in 1909, is a modern, purpose-built school (1971) standing in pleasant grounds and offering an all-round education by well-qualified staff. Religious education and moral training are central to our teaching, based on Gospel principles. Our recent Independent Schools Inspection stated that the school ‘maintains its traditional values, yet incorporates some modern thinking in the curriculum’.
Music plays an important part in the life of the school. All aspects of class music are taught by a specialist. We have a school orchestra, and private individual lessons are available in most instruments. The children's dramatic ability and interest are developed through class lessons, theatre visits and regular productions. Gymnastics, swimming, netball and athletics, taught by a PE specialist, rate high in our physical education programme and the school participates fully in local and national competitions.
Our ICT facilities are excellent and include a computer suite with Broadband technology. There is a well-stocked library, recently computerised to allow pupils to select, issue and return their own books.
The addition of two new classrooms with a large open area has enabled us to develop our art and science curriculum.
The Junior curriculum has been extended to include Latin and touch typing. We offer a wide range of extra curricular activities.
Of equal importance is social development and each child is encouraged to reach his or her full potential and to care for others.
Loreto is a Catholic independent school and is one of many Loreto schools built on the foundations laid by Mary Ward, foundress of the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary, according to the vision of St Ignatius of Loyola.
Visits to the school are welcome by appointment. Admission at 3+ is usually by interview and by interview and Entrance Examination for those wishing to join at 7+. The school is also registered with the Early Years Partnership and grants to parents are used as part-payment of fees in the Foundation Stage.
