Situated in the leafy oasis of the Calthorpe Estate, West House School has occupied the same site since its foundation in 1895. Since that time, the school has evolved significantly, to become an independent preparatory school for boys aged 4 – 11 years, with a co-educational nursery offering care for children aged from 12 months. West House is a member of The Incorporated Association of Preparatory Schools, and the OFSTED registered Nursery holds the Growing Together accreditation. 48-week care is available to all children.
With five acres of beautiful grounds, less than two miles from Birmingham city centre, the school lies at the heart of a thriving community. It is surrounded by many outstanding cultural and recreational facilities. These enrich the lives of all pupils and form an important aspect of educating the whole child.
West House is a non-denominational school, guided by Christian principles. It is divided into departments based on the Key Stages of the National Curriculum. While delivery of the National Curriculum forms the basis of the school's educational philosophy, pupils are encouraged to seize opportunities to broaden their learning experiences far beyond national requirements. In particular, Music and Games occupy significant curriculum time, with the school enjoying an outstanding reputation in the field of performing arts and competitive sport.
Staff ratios are generous, with the average class numbering 12 pupils. This has allowed the school to acquire over many years a unique, family orientated atmosphere, in which pupils genuinely enjoy school life. Pupils are prepared for a wide range of senior schools. Standards at 11+ are consistently high, with most Year 6 boys transferring to local grammar schools, King Edwards School, Birmingham and Solihull School.
West House boasts one of the most active Old Boy's Associations in the Midlands. There are a number of social and sporting occasions during the year, when friends young and old meet up and share their memories.
