Boys and girls come to Wolverhampton Grammar School from all sorts of schools and families. Their experience, knowledge and skills are diverse. What they all have in common, though is an interest in thinking and learning. We ask a great deal of our students. Wolverhampton Grammar School is an academic school, and that means much more than good exam results. The Challenge of Scholarship is central to our students’ lives. We expect them to work hard, to get into the habit of enquiring and finding out for themselves. True scholarship is concerned with discovering new facts and ways of thinking: we believe it’s our job to ensure that our students find that exciting – and fun. Success requires the Spirit of Commitment from our students. That means getting involved, being positive and sticking to something when things get tough. Students who are involved in the whole of school life, playing a leading role in sports, the arts and other activities, are those who achieve most highly in the public examinations too. A school should never just be about what is learned in a classroom: it is about giving students a sense of responsibilities for their own destinies, a conviction that they can make a difference.
From September 2004 WGS has had a new 10+ intake which provided a unique and exciting foundation to the secondary phase of schooling by helping children to develop into successful and effective learners. The Year 6 students not only ‘learn to learn’: they also come to understand the process of learning, how they learn best as individuals, and how that might differ from the way other people learn. This year is designed to put the joy back into scholarship by stimulating curiosity and exploring the nature of learning.
