A Word from the Head

Hallfield, founded in 1879, is a day preparatory school for over 500 boys and girls aged 3 months – 11 years. The school is divided into four sections, Hallfield first for children aged 3 months – 2½, the Kindergarten for children aged 2½ – 3½, the Pre-Preparatory Department for 3½ – 7 years and the Upper School for children aged 7 – 11 years. Close links between the two sections of the School ensure that there is natural progression in academic work when children transfer from the Pre-Prep. to the Upper School. Pupils are prepared for entry to local selective day schools at 11; a few pupils move on to boarding schools. The school has a fine academic record, including an impressive list of Scholarship successes.

Our curriculum is constantly evolving to ensure that we are responding to a rapidly developing world around us and that we are offering our children the best start to their lives as successful citizens in the 21st century. On entering Upper School children may be grouped according to their academic ability. Mathematics groups are set in Years 3 - 6. Children are taught by subject specialists from Year 4 onwards.

Hallfield encourages the development of skills and enjoyment in all subjects including Sport, Music, Drama and Art. The playing fields, which form part of the attractive 20 acre site in the pleasant area of Edgbaston, provide sufficient space to accommodate all the major seasonal sporting activities. Music is given a high profile and many pupils learn musical instruments.

A wide range of extra-curricular activities is available. At the moment these include: Art, Athletics, Badminton, Ballet, Basketball, Brass Ensemble, Chamber Choir, Chess, Classics, Computing, Cookery, Cricket, Cross-Country, Dance, Debating, Drama, Flute Choir, Football, Fun with Maths, Girls’ Games, Karate, Lego, Origami, Recorder Ensembles, Rugby, Science, Speech, School Orchestra, Scrabble, String Orchestra. During the Easter and summer breaks successful holiday clubs operate for a total of 9 weeks.

Classrooms are bright and well-equipped and class sizes never exceed 20. All rooms have the use of interactive whiteboards. Over the past fifteen years an extensive development programme has added a range of new facilities to the original late Georgian buildings, including a purpose-built Nursery and Kindergarten, six additional Pre-Prep. classrooms, two impressive laboratories, Sports Hall, Music School and an all-weather pitch. Recent developments have provided a new I.C.T. Suite, Art & Design Room and Sports Pavilion.
