The Thomas Adams School was established in 1976 on a 30 acre campus as a co-educational comprehensive school catering for all pupils in Wem and the surrounding communities. It was formed by the amalgamation of local schools and dates back to 1650 when Sir Thomas Adams, Bt, founded the Free School of Wem. There are over 1000 pupils and 90 teaching staff (including several specialist part-time teachers). The School has its own open access Sixth Form (Adams College) with a wide range of courses available. Adams House provides boarding accommodation for up to 60 boys and girls, in a family atmosphere. There is a full housestaff led by the Head of Boarding. There is a Tutor present each school day evening. The 6th Form boarders accommodation, in converted cottages, is excellent. (Information on boarding can be obtained from the Head of Boarding Mrs N Cooper, Tel: 01939 233311 Fax: 01939 234382 email: adamshouse@thomasadams.net website: www.adamshouse.co.uk) There is an excellent Joint Use Sports Centre on the Lowe Hill site which has pleasant, well equipped modern buildings with good facilities for all subjects. The Noble Street site includes a purpose-built Sixth Form Centre and a newly converted library with resources to assist self-directed study. The two main sites (approximately three minutes apart on foot) are situated on the edge of extensive playing fields in pleasant surroundings. A newly refurbished Music Centre was opened in 2001. The school was granted the prestigious ‘School Achievement Award’, and achieved Media Arts College status in 2002. The School’s OFSTED report in 2002 was outstanding and the school has an excellent reputation with very pleasing examination results at both GCSE and A level.
The aims are to recognise the importance employers and others place upon examination success whilst at the same time valuing education as whole and seeking to provide an effective preparation for later life. The School caters for pupils across the whole ability range from the extremely able to the pupils who find learning difficult. The objective is for all to achieve their potential. Music and the arts are particularly strong in the school.
