Happiness and confidence equals success…
ONE of the things Moor Park School in Ludlow, a school renowned for its happy atmosphere, is most proud of is the ease with which its pupils move on to their chosen senior school.
Pointing to those who moved on this year, headmaster Jonathan Bartlett reports that: ‘Every year, senior school registrars and staff comment on how easily and quickly Moor Park pupils settle in their new school – they are confident, independent, and can ask for help when they need to.’
It is the school’s knowledge of the children in its care, its understanding of their individual educational needs, their personalities and their talents, combined with its detailed knowledge of the wide variety of senior schools that ensures pupils move seamlessly from the happy ‘place of purposeful informality’ that is Moor Park into the next stage of their education.
This commitment to every child – more than a third of Moor Park students gain scholarships, whether academic, sporting, artistic, musical or ‘all round’ – and ‘the range of schools we feed demonstrates our emphasis on the individual’.
The ‘class of 2008’ was particularly special. 75 won scholarships or awards to their next school. 18 children won awards: 7 academic, 6 art, 1 sport, 4 all-round. With the best Common Entrance results for many years along with, for example, 2 county hockey players, art and music competition winners and a host of other individual successes, a high standard has been set for this year’s senior pupils.
Boarding plays a key part in the Moor Park equation. From ‘flexi to full’, many children enjoy the boarding experience: excellent pastoral care, the companionship of friends, learning to take personal responsibility and much fun in the process. Children as young as 7 begin by boarding one night per week – and normally it is the children who are persuading their hesitant parents that boarding is a good thing. By the time they are 13, many children are boarding full-time, in preparation for senior school. While most pupils go on to boarding schools, those who go to day schools will have benefited from their boarding experience.
Perhaps it is the 85 acres of glorious Shropshire countryside and the space in which the children grow and play which makes the school what it is. Stepping into the Front Hall it quickly becomes apparent that there is more to it than the setting. In an environment which exudes warmth, care and happiness, children will always flourish and achieve.
