Denstone College, close to the Derbyshire/Staffordshire border, combines the traditional elements of a public school education with a modern outlook. Small classes and personal tutors allow for extensive academic and pastoral attention, enabling staff to focus on the development of individual potential in each child. Our innovative boarding system means that pupils board in 'schools', rather than houses. The needs of eighteen year olds are very different from those of eleven year olds, and so our 11 to 14 year olds board in the Junior School, the 15 -16 year olds can be found in the Middle School, and our Sixth Form live and socialise in the Senior School. The traditional house system runs happily alongside, and house spirit and loyalty is very strong in music, drama and sport.
The College's sporting and musical record is the envy of many, and this, alongside a full programme of activities including dance, Combined Cadet Force, Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, golf, watersports, cookery, and a growing number of minority sports, has no doubt contributed to the College being at its fullest for many years. At the time of writing, the College has 523 pupils.
The College has recently benefited from a £4 million development programme, with complete modernisation and redecoration of day and boarding accommodation and impressive Language and IT teaching facilities. Many classrooms have been refurbished and all are now equipped with interactive whiteboards and computers, and a £650,000 Sports Hall opened three years ago. Other recent improvements and additions include a new Theatre, £750,000 of works to the kitchens and servery, and a new Sixth Form Centre which opened earlier this year.
Achievement, confidence and happiness in pupils are central to the College philosophy - we provide a rounded education with many opportunities for every child.
* First class Duke of Edinburgh success - each year, a quarter of our leavers gain the Gold Award
* Over 75% of staff live on campus, so boarders are well cared for
* Over 95% of our pupils go onto their first choice university
Open Days are held regularly, usually during the Summer Term. For further details, or simply to visit the College, contact the Admissions Secretary, Vanessa Carman, on 01889 591415.
