Girls Education at Abbots Bromley School for Girls
AB – a rare jewel in the Woodard Crown
Abbots Bromley School for Girls is one of the country’s leading independent church schools. When I was appointed as Headmistress I described it as ‘a Rare Jewel in the Crown of Woodard Schools’. Now in post, my enthusiasm and energy for this little gem have if anything grown, my aspirations and expectations for it raised even higher. I feel proud and privileged to lead such a successful and exciting school - a school with unique gifts and whose value is truly immeasurable.
Set in a beautiful Staffordshire village, we are a small school in size only – our 53 acre site includes our own ballet school, equestrian centre, and astro-turf! Our theme for this year not surprisingly then is ‘Education and a Great Deal More’ In other words, the ‘Hidden-Curriculum’- the rich opportunities of our extra-curricular life; the special dimension of a caring, living community; the exceptional quality of commitment and sense of belonging from girls, staff and parents alike. Our Christian ethos, natural environment and boarding tradition play pivotal roles here in making for such a happy and thriving atmosphere which brings benefit to girls from aged 4 upwards, boarders and day-girls alike.
Increased self-belief, esteem and confidence are particular key rewards for girls together with a healthy and shared celebration of personal success. At ‘AB’ we aspire to inspire and motivate the girls by raising their own expectations, setting new challenges and potential risks. I have a card which reads ‘No-one forgets a good teacher’! The continued commitment, dedication and encouragement of the staff here is pivotal for maintaining the high standards which continue to be met and set all round. We are unashamedly non-selective and I believe our positive and supportive environment enables each and every girl to achieve her full potential. Our public examination results are consistently excellent and reflect many personal achievements – girls can rightly expect to go to their chosen University! The Sixth Form is the flagship of any school and I am deeply impressed by our ‘end-product’, the girls we are sending out into the world from ‘AB’, a world which is all the better for these poised, confident and articulate young women.
‘AB’ is an exceptionally friendly community which cares passionately about and is deservedly proud of its school. Her inner flame has always burned bright and in keeping with the tradition of the best girls’ schools she has never stood still. Girls, Parents and Staff are already working together with me to take our flourishing school into its next chapter. Early in 2006 the whole school will once again be inspected. I have been asked, following the excellent report after the last inspection six years ago, what are my aspirations for this ‘Second Phase Inspection’? My confident response to this is that it must highlight the strengths and ideals reflected in the high expectations and standards we live out daily in our community here. In effect, then, we can continue to focus our energies this year on our primary job of promoting our girls’ capabilities, extending their personal horizons and encouraging each and everyone of them ‘to fly’!
