Early in the year 2000 the Horizon School for Children with Autism opened as an Education Centre in Staffordshire with the support of Boston Higashi School. The educational approach is based on the Daily Life Therapy approach for children with autism.
The school is purpose built and offers spacious classrooms, a large gymnasium and swimming pool, together with a large staff team, administration and catering facilities. It offers both residential and day placements within the local community for children between the ages of four to nineteen years who exhibit learning difficulties within the spectrum of autism.
The School encourages learning through an active approach focusing on the development of physical fitness along with whole body co-ordination and emotional stability. This is delivered through stimulating activities that allow the development of attention, improved self-composure and co-operation. Development of communication skills and personal and social education also forms a major part of a child’s individual education programme.
Emphasis is placed on establishing appropriate behaviour control in all settings. All students are taught, primarily, as part of the whole class group; however, small group and individual work is undertaken depending upon the needs of the children and the demands of the activities. Students are offered specialist input and practice of skills by members of the multi-disciplinary team.
