Millfield’s philosophy has always been to help every individual to achieve their full potential by attempting to discover and nurture whatever talent a young person has, and to prepare them for life ahead. Along with Millfield Preparatory School, which was founded a decade later, Millfield believes that education is concerned with the whole human being, and that every pupil has the ability to achieve something worthwhile in some area. Therefore, Millfield is well known for its outstanding sporting achievements, but also has extremely high standards in academic subjects, music and the arts.
The Prep School’s facilities include a Recital Hall, Drama Hall and Sports Hall, and an indoor 25m Swimming Pool. Millfield is aided in its aspirations by world class facilities, which include an indoor Tennis Centre, Equestrian Centre, Fine Arts Centre, Concert Hall, 50m Swimming Pool, Athletics Track, and three Olympic-quality water-based Astro turfs.
Millfield Prep School boasts a staff to pupil ratio of 1:8, with the senior school offering a staff to pupil ratio of 1:7.5. Small class sizes have always been a vital part of the Millfield philosophy.
Our Pre-Prep department caters for children from the age of two, and combines a careful blend of numeracy and literacy with a wide range of subjects as well as many extra-curricular activities. Pupils aged 7-9 are taught in the Junior Department, with most of their classes being taken by their Group Tutors. After this, pupils are taught by specialist teachers, with English and Mathematics remaining central to the curriculum, along with twelve other subjects and a choice of languages. IT skills are learnt and developed across all subjects. The Potential Academic and Curricular Excellence (PACE) Programme caters for those pupils with exceptional academic ability.
Millfield offers a wide range of subjects at GCSE level, and offers a choice of 37 different subjects at AS/A2 Level, including seven different languages, as well as a selection of vocational courses. Over 200 sixth formers go on to university each year.
The happiness and well-being of our pupils is a high priority. Each pupil belongs to a house which provides the secure base on which he or she can build emotional stability and self-confidence. Day pupils and boarders from a variety of different countries, cultures and religions come together to form the School’s rich and diverse community. They are all supported by a comprehensive network of Group Tutors, Heads of Year and Houseparents, who are responsible for each pupil’s welfare.
