Ackworth School, founded in 1779, has large, Georgian buildings of great distinction. These, together with extensive gardens, provide a magnificent setting for the education of young people. Conveniently situated for Leeds, Wakefield, Doncaster and Barnsley, Ackworth is close to motorways and fast trains to London. It is fully co-educational with boarders and day pupils in the Senior School and a Junior School (known as Coram House) which admits day pupils from 2. Senior School entry is at 11, 12, 13 and 16+ by entrance test, reference and interview. Scholarships and bursaries are available.
Academic standards are very high. Over 95% of pupils regularly move on to degree courses. Not all our pupils are academic 'high flyers' as we recognise the importance of other strengths and the value of achievement in many spheres. For this reason Ackworth offers a rich variety of activities and all pupils are strongly encouraged to take part in them. Music thrives with orchestras and choirs, 20 specialist music teachers and a programme of free music tuition to all 11 year olds on 3 instruments to 'launch them musically'. Concerts take place in our purpose built Music Centre, or in the Fothergill Theatre. Our sporting facilities are also excellent and pupils can enjoy activities ranging from archery and athletics to snowboarding and salsa dancing. There is an extensive programme of optional weekend visits to concerts, sporting events and places of interest. Our boarding accommodation is part of our long-term programme of development of the School – the boys’ boarding house was recently refurbished, and the girls now have specially designed study bedrooms.
Each student at Ackworth School’s International Centre enjoys a varied, stimulating and challenging programme which combines academic, social, cultural and pastoral elements to produce a truly excellent ‘all round’ package. From the moment a student arrives at Ackworth School’s International Centre, help and support is always close at hand. Each student has two dedicated personal tutors, one male and one female, and receives ESL tuition in classes consisting of a maximum of eight students.
Above all, Ackworth is a Quaker school where we look for the good in people and encourage the individual. There is a very distinctive homely and friendly atmosphere, which is regularly commented upon by visitors.
