Ruthin School is a successful and prosperous co-educational day and boarding School, with circa 200 pupils. The School is situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty, on the edge of a market town, in an area that is a safe and secure environment. The development of self confidence and maturity in students is regarded as being as important as academic achievement.
The School has a 100% record of all students wishing to gain a University place achieving that goal, many studying Science and Business. Class sizes are small, with a team of enthusiastic staff dedicated to ensuring that every student achieves their full potential.
In 2006 98% of A level grades were A-E, with 64% at A or B. At GCSE the percentage of A*-C grades was 82%.
The School has an open policy on students entering examinations, and broadly has a non-selective intake.
Significant development of facilities is ongoing. Within the last two years there has been extensive refurbishment of boarding facilities, new state of the art IT suite, refurbished refectory facilities, and a £1 million Sports Hall. Further major developments are being planned. There is a wealth of extra curricular activities including mountain biking, climbing, car maintenance, target shooting, golf, swimming, Duke of Edinburgh Award, Cadet Force, sailing, canoeing, basketball and badminton.
The School has active drama and music departments with choirs, school orchestra and several drama productions per year.
Students from Hong Kong have had a number of notable successes in recent years. Academic results have been above average for the school, with admissions to Bath University – Pharmacy; Manchester University – Mathematics; Dundee University – Accountancy; York University – Biochemistry; Liverpool University – Physical Sciences, amongst many others.
Recent results of the IELTS examinations have been particularly good with 100% of sixth form overseas students achieving level 6 or higher. Overseas students have also gained considerably from the extra curricular programme, being members of the team winning the Welsh climbing championships.
