Thornton College is a happy and flourishing day and boarding school, catering for girls aged 2½ to 16 and boys from 2½ to 4. We work in partnership with parents to develop the full potential of each child, both within the classroom and outside it. We expect pupils to work hard at their studies and to participate fully in a wide range of extra-curricular activities. We equip our students to contribute effectively and responsibly to the community of which they are a part. Our pupils leave us prepared to meet future challenges and confident that they can make a difference to the world in which we live.
We believe that children achieve best when they are happy. The school provides a caring and supportive community and is successful in creating an ethos which celebrates all kinds of achievement. Founded on traditional Christian values, we demand high standards of courtesy and our pupils are encouraged to take responsibility for each other and for their environment. The school is a Catholic foundation though children from many different denominations are warmly welcomed.
The choice of the right school for your child is one of the most important decisions you will ever make. We believe that Thornton College offers a special opportunity for children to grow, to develop and to learn. The Sisters of Jesus and Mary, our dedicated staff, supportive parents and the enthusiasm and talents of our pupils make Thornton a very special school.
Our academic results are excellent, regularly placing Thornton in ‘The Times’ and ‘The Daily Telegraph’ Top Independent Schools. This is particularly impressive, as we do not select girls on the basis of academic examination. The majority of our girls go on to study ‘A’ level and progress to the University of their choice.
Twenty-five acres of parkland surrounding the school afford every opportunity for recreation. Whilst its setting is peaceful and secluded, the school is within a few miles of the ancient towns of Buckingham and Stony Stratford, and the new town of Milton Keynes with its excellent shopping and leisure facilities.
The school is easily accessible from a wide catchment area with eight dedicated bus routes catering for day pupils. The school is within easy reach of the M1, A5 and M40 and escorts to all major airports in the south of England and the Midlands can be arranged for overseas boarders.
