Akeley Wood is an independent co-educational day school for some nine hundred pupils between the ages of three and eighteen. It occupies three separate sites, each of which is organised to meet the changing needs of different age groups. Teaching is in classes of about twenty (though examination groups are often much smaller).
Although we place a particular emphasis on high academic achievement, it is our aim that pupils should develop their individual talents and personal qualities in whatever direction they may lie. We hope that our pupils will genuinely enjoy and value their time here and will take with them not only the best possible qualifications, but also a sense of purpose, a belief in themselves, firm friendships and a caring attitude towards those around them.
Developing a child’s self-discipline, creativity and the ability to work and play alongside others is essential. The Nursery at Akeley Wood provides a happy and secure introduction to school life. The spacious rooms are ablaze with colour and there is a busy and purposeful atmosphere.
As in all departments in the school, children are treated as individuals and they are encouraged to work at their own pace, developing vital skills for the future. From the age of 4, an emphasis is placed upon the basic skills of reading, writing and arithmetic, but there is still ample opportunity for play, as well as for creative and physical pursuits.
The small groups and specialist teaching allow class teachers to work successfully with each pupil. We have high expectations of the children, and their enthusiasm and pleasure in their own achievement are evident everywhere.
Most importantly, we hope that pupils will genuinely enjoy and value their time here and will take with them, not only the best possible qualifications but also a sense of purpose, a belief in themselves, firm friendships and a caring attitude towards those around them.
Throughout the Junior School, pupils learn to be responsible for their actions and do the very best their potential allows. We expect them to be polite and considerate.
The result is a happy community in which each child’s gifts are valued and nurtured, preparing him or her as fully as possible for the fresh challenges of the Lower School.
