The Beacon offers an excellent education for boys aged 3 – 13. The school is based around a 17th century farmstead, providing a most attractive environment. Modern, well equipped buildings have been added, including 2 Science Laboratories, ICT suite (internet and wireless network throughout the school), Design Technology centre, Music Department, Sports Hall and Changing rooms. There are also 12 acres of sports fields, an Astroturf pitch and a swimming pool. A new language centre was opened in September 2007.
The school aims to provide a wide variety of academic, sporting, creative and cultural activities within a caring community. Achievement, consideration for others and good self discipline are highly valued. The Nursery and Lower School offers a broad curriculum and provides a solid foundation in literacy and numeracy. In addition to the usual academic lessons, boys in the Middle and Upper Schools, have lessons in Art, Design, Music, PE and ICT each week. The main sports are Rugby, Soccer, Cricket, Athletics, Swimming, Tennis and Hockey. The school is renowned for offering excellence in ICT.
The Beacon offers a progressive curriculum in a school that upholds traditional values, with a breadth of opportunity available beyond the classroom. Academic standards are high because pupils are encouraged to work up to the level of their ability at all times, in an atmosphere that is amicable and happy. The school aims to develop fully all aspects of each child and encourages participation in a range of sports, clubs and societies. Music is strong, with approximately 60% of pupils over 7 years of age learning at least one instrument.
From Year 6 a number of boys leave at age 11 to attend local Grammar schools. The remaining boys depart for senior Independent schools at age 13. The Beacon has an excellent record of success in entrance and scholarship exams to senior schools, with a Common Entrance pass rate that is normally 100%.
We believe an education at The Beacon offers a safe, secure and happy preparation for the demands of life in the contemporary world where qualities of character, individual ability and positive self-esteem really matter. We aim to prepare boys for the challenge of life in their senior school and for them to leave as polite, confident young men with a belief in their own abilities, a sense of humour and a positive approach to life.
