A Word from the Head

ETHOS: Swanbourne has a friendly atmosphere with an emphasis on care and consideration. The school is run in a family style, with the house system playing an important part in pastoral care and competition.

ACADEMICS: We follow a rigorous programme, with effort and progress reports to parents every three-four weeks. We have all the Science, language and computers that you would expect in a modern school. The basis of our work is Common Entrance, which is now in line with the national curriculum.

TEACHING AND SCHOLARSHIPS: We stream from eight years of age and wherever possible we set for Maths, so that the children move at the correct pace. Nearly 50% of top year pupils achieved scholarships to Public School in 2005. Scholarships are won regularly, 26 in the last three years.

DESTINATION SCHOOLS: Single sex schools such as: Eton, Winchester, Downe House, Queenswood, Radley, Tudor Hall, Bedford. Top co-ed schools such as: Stowe, Oundle, Oakham, Rugby, Marlborough, St Edwards, Oxford. Local grammar schools may be chosen.

SPORTS: We have a strong tradition in rugby, cricket, football, netball, rounders and hockey. We have wonderful facilities including extensive pitches, an astro-turf in 1997, squash court, sports hall, Star Grade * changing rooms, a new swimming pool October 2001.

MUSIC: Music is particularly strong at Swanbourne with the children having the opportunity to be in a choir and to play instruments, as well as having classroom lessons.

SPECIAL NEEDS: If any child has a learning difficulty, we do aim to integrate them as far as possible but we allow for one or two lessons for tutorial work to help children who are dyslexic or slow to read/write and understand numbers. Individual parents carry the cost of these sessions.

BOARDING: We hold a current and highly commendable Boarding Inspection Report. We have a thriving, happy boarding house. Our boarding is extremely popular and flexible. Children can be full or weekly boarders and there is the opportunity to come and enjoy bed and breakfast, or sleep-overs. We are perfect for weekly boarding from a London base. At the weekend we operate family style, with traditional Sunday lunch, trips to the cinema, swimming, relaxing in the grounds or the tennis courts, picnics on the lawn and camping opportunities.

EARLY EDUCATION: Outstanding, purpose built nursery and excellent Pre-Prep.
