St Mary's is a Catholic day and boarding school for girls situated in the centre of Cambridge, 5 minutes walk from the train station. The school stands in attractive grounds overlooking the University Botanic Gardens and has a separate Sixth Form centre and well equipped ICT centres. Boarders in Year 11 and above enjoy superb single study bedrooms with internet access, while younger girls share comfortable accommodation.

St Mary's provides not only the development of each girl's academic potential but also an all-round education which seeks to develop the 'whole' person in a spiritually enriching ethos. We believe that single-sex education provides a safe and supportive environment for girls to develop self-confidence in readiness to meet the challenges of the modern world. St Mary's has a purposeful and happy atmosphere and we encourage high academic standards as well as a zest for and love of life.

Academic standards are high and students consistently achieve excellent results in public examinations: 100% pass rate at all examination levels in 2007. A = most common grade at A + AS. A* = most common grade at GCSE. 64% of grades at GCSE were A + A*. Girls may choose from four languages (including Latin) and most study three separate sciences. Regular fieldtrips are a key part of Geography and Biology. Extra-curricular visits, trips abroad and regular foreign exchange trips are organised to places like South Africa, Spain, Germany and France.

ICT is well integrated into all subject areas and enjoys outstanding facilities with over 200 networked computers. A number of classrooms are equipped with Smartboards.

Music, drama and sport are all strong. The creative arts are well established, with many opportunities for students to take part in music, dance, drama and PE. Both the Duke of Edinburgh Award and the Arts Award are offered. Many girls represent not only St Mary's but also play for the county and at national level in a variety of sporting disciplines.

Admission is mainly at 4+ (for St Mary's Junior School) and in the Senior School at 11+, 13+ and 16+. The school has a Sixth Form centre which houses three seminar rooms, a quiet study area with ICT facilities and two large common rooms. This provides excellent learning and social facilities, encouraging independence prior to students going on to University. Young Enterprise is an outstanding feature of Sixth Form life. The teams have won Cambridgeshire's 'Best Company' Award three times. The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme is also very popular with many girls participating at all levels. This year we have 12 girls who have already achieved the Gold Award.

Four academic scholarships at years 3, 7 and 9, 2 100% bursaries, 2 Creative, Performing arts and sports scholarships for years 3,7 and 9 are offered, as well as 4 scholarships for sixth form entry. Also available is the Mary Ward scholarship, at years 6, 8 and 10, along with 2 additional scholarships in the sixth form for travel and study.

The Headmistress enjoys meeting individually with all prospective students and their parents at an informal interview. The entrance examination is held on the last Saturday in January.

All enquiries about the school should be directed to the Registrar on Cambridge (01223) 224126.

Alumni - Famous alumni include Madame Giscard d'Estaing, Madame Hempill (niece of Louis Pasteur) and most recently, Lucy Neville-Rolfe, Director of Corporate Affairs, Tesco. 'I was taught an enormous amount about determination and debating skills which have helped me everywhere from 10 Downing Street (where I worked in the policy unit) to Tesco.'
