Founded in 1629 by Archbishop Samuel Harsnett and set in open countryside, Chigwell School is a relatively small HMC school well known for its distinctive and friendly atmosphere. Much of this comes from the School's location, history and tradition.
The School is located in historic Chigwell Village in Essex which has at its heart the School, the parish church of St Mary and the King's Head, the latter made famous as The Maypole in Charles Dickens' Barnaby Rudge. The most famous old pupil was William Penn (1644-1718), founder of the state of Pennsylvania and described by President Thomas Jefferson as the 'greatest lawgiver the world has produced'. The School motto 'Aut Viam Inveniam Aut Faciam', translates at 'Find a Way or Make a Way', so relevant to Chigwell's reputation for producing citizens of the world.
The School is made up of the Junior School (aged 7-13, with approximately 330 pupils) and the Senior School (aged 13-18, with approximately 400 pupils).
The Junior School's modern, purpose-designed buildings have expanded to cope with the increasing demand for places. Lessons include English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Religious Education, PE, Art, Latin, French, German, IT and Design and Technology. While the Junior School has its own art studio and science laboratory it benefits greatly from the facilities of the whole School. Pupils in the 7-9 age range are taught mostly by their form teachers and those in the upper four years are taught by subject specialists, many of whom will continue to teach the junior pupils when they progress to the Senior School at age 13.
All pupils benefit from the numerous clubs and activities that take place at lunchtime and after school. These include music, drama, pottery, art, basketball, football, tennis, swimming, dance, theatre visits, model making and chess and astronomy. All pupils are encouraged to participate in and enjoy the extra-curricular life that is offered by the School.
The Senior School operates a House System with four Houses: Caswalls', Lambourne, Penns' and Swallow's. On September 1997 the School moved to becoming fully co-educational, a process that was completed throughout the School in September 2001. Sixth Form girls have indeed been an integral part of Chigwell since 1973.
Pastoral care is a key element for all pupils helped by the School's House and Boarding Systems. Additionally there are many activities taking place outside school hours. Sport, Music, Drama and Art are particularly strong at Chigwell, but there is a wide range of activities to choose from.
