ETHOS
Pocklington is a traditional school with strong values rooted in its 1514 Christian foundation. Boarders and day pupils integrate well here to make a very happy, active and thriving school community and are encouraged to contribute to the wider society in which they live. Our pupils enjoy excellent supportive relationships with their teachers in small classes and Pocklington’s curriculum has been developed to motivate and stretch pupils to enable individuals to achieve their true potential. There is also excellent university and careers advice and the majority of our pupils go on to study at university including Oxbridge.
FACILITIES
Pocklington School is currently undergoing an extensive programme of facility improvement. Projects completed in the last eighteen months include: Astroturf pitches, a new science laboratory, the refurbishment of the sports hall, the creation of a new computerized school library, an additional IT teaching facility and a cookery suite. Recent additions opened in 2007 include a new purpose built senior boys’ boarding house (Fenwick-Smith House) in which all bedrooms are en-suite and a safe drop-off and parking area for day pupils. New CCF facilities being constructed in partnership with the MOD are due to be completed soon.
BOARDING
Pocklington is committed to full boarding. Approximately 17% of our pupils are boarders. They live in five single sex boarding houses (two junior and three senior) located on or adjacent to the campus and enjoy full weekend programmes. Each boarding house is run by caring, committed and well-trained staff for whom it is also their family home. Meals, including breakfast, are provided in a central dining hall on the campus. A wide choice of food is available at most meals and staff and pupils use the same facilities.
EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
The school has good playing fields, plenty of open space and a swimming pool. Pupils have the opportunity to take part in a wide range of sporting and extra- curricular activities including, music and drama in a purpose built theatre, both during and after school. Boarders also have their own special programme of social and house activities after school and at weekends. See our website for further information.
LOCATION
On a 64 acre campus on the edge of the small rural market town of Pocklington, 12 miles from York, 20 miles from Hull. For international pupils Manchester Airport (2 hours drive) offers good access via Amsterdam, Frankfurt or Heathrow to a large number of destinations. Leeds Bradford and Humberside Airports are also less than an hour’s drive from the school. The North Sea Ferry Service from Hull provides easy access to Northern Europe.
