Gordonstoun is a co-educational boarding school, for pupils from 8 to 18, situated in an attractive and impressive setting in the temperate region of Morayshire. Travel from UK is straightforward with most budget airlines flying into Aberdeen and Inverness Airports. The School is regarded as one of the leading independent schools in the world.
The School’s mission statement: ‘Gordonstoun prepares students for a full and active role as international citizens in a changing world’, is balanced by the motto ‘Plus est en vous’ (There is more in you) to give real meaning to a distinctive philosophy founded on internationalism, challenge, responsibility and service.
An integrated curriculum enables students to reach their full potential and there is a strong emphasis on developing personal qualities. Junior School pupils are prepared for and sit the Common Entrance examinations for entry to the Senior School and other independent schools. In the Senior School students first study a wide range of subjects, followed by a two year course for GCSE examinations. Sixth formers prepare four subjects to AS level and continue with three to A2. Information Technology is used throughout the curriculum utilising a campus wide IT network. There is a strong Learning Support Department and teaching in English as an Additional Language is available throughout.
Sports facilities include extensive playing fields; a sports centre, heated swimming pool, multi-gym, climbing wall, squash courts and a floodlit Astroturf playing surface. Regular sports fixtures and overseas tours take place in all major sports.
The Performing Arts are a great strength of the School. Drama, Music and Dance are taught in the academic programme but available to all students as part of the broader curriculum. Facilities include a purpose-built studio theatre, music recital room and music recording studio. There are frequent tours both within the UK and overseas.
The School’s outdoor education programme is unique. All Gordonstoun students take part in expeditions in the Scottish Highlands and sail open boats in the Moray Firth in preparation for voyages on the School’s 80 foot Sail Training vessel off the west coast of Scotland. Participation in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme is strongly encouraged.
All students are involved in Rescue and Community Services, designed to meet the needs of the local and wider community. Most have at least one major international experience during their time in the School whether on exchange or on an international service project. Gordonstoun is the leading member of ‘Round Square’, a world-wide network of schools committed to the holistic ideals of the School’s founder, Kurt Hahn.
