A Word from the Head

Breckenbrough School is a residential boarding school, for forty pupils aged between 9 – 17 who exhibit emotional and behavioural difficulties and high academic potential. All of our pupils have repeatedly struggled with the structure and ethos of mainstream education where their eccentricities and needs have never been adequately met. Our pupils have in effect learning differences that deserve the opportunity to be developed. We have developed expertise and success with boys diagnosed with Aspergers, ADHD, ADD and Dyslexia in recent years. The school also offers support, advice and training on conflict resolution.

The school is a non-profit making charitable trust, whose governors are appointed by the Yorkshire General Meeting of the Society of Friends (Quakers). The school is located just a few miles outside Thirsk, within easy access of the A1 and on the main East Coast railway line. It is equidistant from the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors National Parks. The school is situated in ten acres of land with sports fields, a pond and a motorbike track. The school is housed in a Victorian country house, which serves as the living accommodation, together with an attached modern classroom block.

The ethos reflects the philosophy of the Society of Friends. Central to the ethos is the belief in the innate good of everyone. We give our pupils the time and space to be themselves in a clear, non-confrontational, flexible structure. Where there are problems we encourage honesty in addressing them in order to move forward. We seek initially to avoid conflicts through the structure of the school and the developing expertise of the staff. Where there are conflicts, we diffuse them, before moving onto the more complex task of resolving them. There is a strong expectation of progress.

The curriculum, although based on the National Curriculum, reflects the school ethos and caters for the individual learning differences of our pupils. Through both the formal and hidden curriculum, pupils are given a wide range of educational experiences including a strong emphasis on Outdoor Education and the rich local environment. There is an expectation that all our pupils can take between 5 and 12 GCSEs and aim for at least Grade C or above.

The school is committed to the welfare of the children in our care. We are members of the Forum on Children and Violence. We have a comprehensive Child Protection Policy, which all staff have signed up to and is available to parents on request. We also have links to other groups and agencies that work in similar areas.

Parents are encouraged to work closely with the school and apply our strategies and philosophy at home. We have a support network for both past and present parents. The After Care Committee is a separate charity, but is an important part of our provision, which maintains contact with old boys and in certain circumstances can offer short-term support.
