An independent co-educational boarding and day school, including Nursery, Pre-Prep, Prep and Senior School, including Sixth Form. Bearwood College is set in a beautiful rural Berkshire estate at Wokingham and served by an excellent communication network.
Bearwood's origins go back to 1827, its parent body being the charity the Royal Merchant Navy School Foundation.
All pupils are positively encouraged to perform to their best, both academically and outside the classroom. The academic programme broadly follows and exceeds the National Curriculum, culminating in a full range of GCSEs and the choice of over 20 A/Level subjects. Progress and effort are supervised on an individual basis. A generous staff/pupil ratio ensures small classes allowing real focus on each person.
Pupils are all engaged in a wide selection of games (both team and individual sports) and other extra-curricular activities. Drama and Music are an important feature of College life. The majority of pupils play a musical instrument or sing, and there are several classical and contemporary ensembles. Everyone is involved in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. Outdoor pursuits include mountain walking and climbing trips, skiing and snowboarding, offshore yachting, Combined Cadet Force expeditions and many others.
The pastoral care of the pupils is given a high priority. Every pupil is a member of one of six Houses, under the Housemaster of Housemistress, an assistant and a body of pastoral tutors. This team, together with the Chaplain, the matrons and the medical department, is responsible for a pupil's well being throughout his or her time at Bearwood. Sixth Formers have their own social centre.
Access is easy. Bearwood is close to the motorway network, and is within easy reach of Heathrow and Gatwick Airports, and 35 minutes from central London by train.
Entry is normally at the ages of 11, 13 and 16, but it is possible to consider entry at other ages. Various closed (HM Forces, Old Royals and Merchant Navy) and open scholarships are available.
Bearwood Nursery provides care and education for children aged 3 months to 5 years. Our Pre-Prep Department, caters for children aged 5 to 7 years (Reception, Year 1 and Year 2). Our Year 3 Prep class is already running and from September 2008 the full Prep school will offer education for 7 to 11 year olds.
