Sparsholt College Hampshire, near Winchester, is one of the United Kingdom’s longest established land-based colleges and, with excellent inspection reports from OfSTED and the Quality Assurance Agency for higher education, one of the best regarded. The college has been awarded Centre of Vocational Excellence status by the Learning Skills Council in areas covering more than half its teaching provision and for overall Leadership and Management.

Land-based training and education now includes career development towards every aspect of work and business in the countryside (farms, forests country parks), with animals (farm, domestic, horses, exotic, fish, wildlife) and with the green environment (horticulture, urban landscapes, parks and gardens, outdoor sports facilities). Outdoor sporting activities, using the big outdoors, are also offered.

Situated in rolling chalk downland half way between Winchester and Stockbridge, the attractive rural campus has kept pace with demands for growth with modern teaching facilities and some of the best practical training resources in the country. There are boarding facilities in college halls for over 400 and many students take advantage of the Campus Direct coach service to the College from all over Hampshire and beyond.

Currently, some 1,800 full-time students study on over 40 different courses, ranging from Level 1 (introductory) courses to Foundation and Honours Degrees. While the degree level courses are validated by the University of Portsmouth, Sparsholt College is directly funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for their delivery. Many part-time, short and business practice courses are also provided.

The College takes pride in training people, at all levels, to do the jobs in the industries for which they aspire to work. Our courses are therefore described as “vocational” - a term misunderstood by some. Most professionals undergo specialist (vocational) training to do their job – eg: doctors, lawyers, teachers, accountants, veterinary surgeons. Our role at Sparsholt College is to provide such training for those who are ready for it after GCSEs or after 6th Form study.

The C&G and BTEC qualifications are fully equivalent to other forms of study. A two-year BTEC National Diploma, for example, provides a course of study focused on a student’s specific career interest and includes relevant science, technology and business, as well as the practical skills required to thoroughly understand how the business is delivered. It is equivalent to three full A Levels. The courses suit those who know which career appeals to them and who want a direct route to an advantageous rung on the career ladder.
