A Word from the Head

The school in Abinger Hammer built in 1873 by Thomas Henry Farrer was taken over by the County Council in 1909. Abinger Hammer Village School opened its doors as a non-fee paying trust school on 8th September 1982 following decision for closure. That there is a school open today is due to the determination of local people convinced that the village would be losing a vital constituent should there cease to be a school.

All essentials of the National Curriculum are followed. Benefits for a small group living and learning in an historically interesting and geologically varied countryside include many opportunities and expeditions to explore wider interests, indoors and out. Lessons include music, swimming, art dancing, drama and French.

The small numbers give every child an exceptional amount of teacher attention. In a small mixed-age class, hierarchy is replaced by a sense of family. Friendships form naturally across year groups.

We hope to ensure all pupils develop the secure intellectual and personal confidence which will help them to make sound choices and follow their own paths through a rapidly changing world.

ADMISSIONS:
At four to five years. Four-year-olds are admitted at the beginning of the new academic year, if such a move is appropriate, and after consultation with parents.

To visit the School, or if you have any queries, please telephone 01306 730343 during school hours (Mrs Townsend), or 01306 730868 in the evening (Mrs Corke).
