GENERAL. The Yehudi Menuhin School founded in 1963 by Yehudi Menuhin provides specialist music tuition in stringed instruments and piano to about 66 musically gifted boys and girls aged between 8 and 18 and aims to enable them to pursue their love of music, develop their musical potential and achieve standards of performance at the highest level. The School also provides a broad education within a relaxed open community in which each individual can fully develop intellectual, artistic and social skills.
ADMISSION. Entry to the School is by music audition and prospective pupils are auditioned at any time during the year.
MUSIC. At least half each day is devoted to musical studies. Pupils receive a minimum of two one-hour lessons each week on their first study instrument and at least half an hour on their second study instrument. Other subjects in the music curriculum include composition, aural training, chamber music, string orchestra. Regular opportunities for solo performance are of central importance to the musical activity of the School. Alexander Technique is provided.
ACADEMIC STUDIES AND SPORT. The curriculum is designed to be balanced and to do full justice to both the musical and the general education of each pupil. All classes are small with excellent opportunities for individual attention, and as a result GCSE and A Level examination rates are high. Pupils from overseas with limited English receive an intensive course in the English Language from specialist teachers.
SCHOOL FACILITIES. Sports facilities, including tennis, badminton, football, running, swimming, rounders and yoga.
PASTORAL. The international reputation of the School brings pupils from all over the world who find a happy atmosphere in a large musical family. Pupils live in single or shared rooms and are cared for by the resident House Staff, the Matron, and the School Doctor.
There is a one week half-term holiday each term when the School closes. At other weekends pupils may go home after lunch on Saturday until Sunday evening unless they are playing in a concert. Primary aged pupils are weekly boarders and return home every weekend.
FEES AND BURSARIES. All pupils fully resident in the UK are awarded an Aided Place Bursary under the Music and Dance Scheme which is subsidised by the Department for Education and Skills. Parents therefore pay according to their means a contribution to the School fees, which is assessed by the Department for Education. Pupils from overseas are required to pay the full boarding fee until they qualify for a DfES grant after two full calendar years in the UK.
