"The boys are valued, challenged but not pressured" (Homefield School's ISI inspection, February 2006).
Homefield Preparatory School was founded in 1870 and reconstituted as an Educational Trust in 1967 under a Board of Governors. In May 1968 the School moved into purpose-built premises designed to accommodate Junior and Senior Departments. A new purpose-built Early Years' Unit for children aged 2.5-5 has been opened in September 2003. A new building offering 2 new science laboratories, a large LRC, Art/D&T and music suites has been opened in September 2008.
A two-acre school playing field together with the unrestricted use of a further six acres of the Sutton Cricket Club ground 2 minutes' walk away, provide first class sporting facilities all the year round. The school also has a large and modern sports hall.
Whilst the usual seasonal games (Soccer, Rugby and Cricket) are played, there are also facilities for Judo, Athletics, Cross-country, Fencing, Squash, Basketball, Short Tennis, Tennis, Table Tennis and Karate. The boys also learn to swim and play golf.
Each boy is encouraged to join at least one of over 40 clubs and societies which meet during out-of-school hours. Two Homefield teams, in the under-9 and the under-11 age groups, have won the National Primary Chess semi-finals and are off to the National finals.
Homefield has a very strong academic tradition and an excellent reputation for Music and Sport. Every boy has been accepted by his first choice Senior School at Common Entrance in the last ten years with an average of 16 awards per year. Two scholarships to Wesminster, one for Music and one for the coveted Queen's Award, have been won last Summer. Old boys include amongst others Lord Colin Cowdrey, Sir Graham Sutherland and Dr John Rae.
