Farleigh Further Education College (Swindon) is a specialist co-educational 38 week residential and day placement college for students aged 16-19 (on entry) with Asperger’s Syndrome and associated disorders. The college encourages students to achieve their learning goals, whilst helping them to grow as individuals and accepting the complexities of Asperger’s Syndrome.
Accommodation is offered in two community houses in the quiet residential area of Swindon’s ‘Old Town’, within easy walking distance of the many shops in the busier town centre.
The college has a partnership with two local mainstream colleges, New College and Swindon College. This gives students’ access to a wide variety of academic and vocational college courses, including A/AS Level subjects and work-based qualifications such as BTEC diplomas and NVQs (level 1-5). Both colleges offer courses that offer a natural progression to Higher Education or employment.
Each student has access to a learning support worker, who provides 1:1 educational support within the mainstream college environment, as well as acting as a mentor, guide and carer to the student.
Essential life skills such as independent travel, budgeting, cooking, social skills and personal care are learned through a variety of activities.
Additional numeracy, literacy and Open College Network courses are offered at Farleigh House, the learning centre sited on the Swindon College campus. This centre offers respite from the intensity of the mainstream environment. The centre houses an IT suite, classroom, quiet room, training kitchen and student common room.
A Speech and Language Therapist, Art Therapist and counsellor are available at Fairview House in Swindon’s ‘Old Town’. The Principal’s and administration offices are also to be found here.
From the outset, students are encouraged and supported to make informed choices and decisions. At the end of their programmes of their time with us, they will be better prepared to move on to the next step in their independent pathway, be that higher education, employment, supported accommodation or independent living within the community.
