Service Parents looking for a boarding school for their children want one that will understand their specific needs. They want their children to be happy and well looked after and to enjoy personal success. In addition as service parents they want to be reassured that the weekends are busy and active; that there is comprehensive medical support; that they are not required to move their offspring for frequent exeats; that there are comprehensive travel arrangements and that they can communicate easily with their children often from distant locations.
A school which provides precisely this support, and much more, is the MOD’s own school, The Duke of York’s Royal Military School. It is a boarding school where all 500 pupils are full time boarders aged 11-18 with military parents. The school knows and understands the needs of service families and is uniquely placed to meet them. It offers a strong sense of stability to what can often be a very disruptive educational experience.
The term military refers to the parents’ background, and the school shares the values of its parents where qualities of leadership, teamwork and a degree of self-reliance are so important. The school is high achieving and has established a reputation as one of the leading boarding schools in the country with outstanding academic results. Pupils also excel in sport, music, drama and a wide range of activities.
The school is tri-service and exclusively for children whose parents are serving or who have had four years active service in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces.
The school is currently seeking Academy status and this will be formalised in the spring of 2010.
