A Word from the Head

The College offers a fresh alternative to traditional independent education, accepting day students from the age of 11 and boarding students from the age of 16. All have the opportunity to thrive in a happily distinctive atmosphere where they are encouraged to explore their subjects rigorously but often more freely than is possible within the confines of a conventional school.

The College combines informality with the structure, pastoral support and academic rigour of a top independent school. Our only entrance qualification is an honest determination to work hard. Originally established to provide intensive short courses for first time and retake A level students we still offer uniquely flexible academic programmes whereby students can enrol right through from Year 9 to A level. Many join us just for their second year of GCSE or A level study.

Our students enjoy being here and are treated as young adults. We have high expectations and are small enough to get to know everyone really well. Our teaching, administrative, residential and support staff have a genuine interest in their progress and welfare. Our classes are exceptionally small – a maximum group size of 8 at A level and 12 in Years 7-11. There is no uniform and students and staff are on first name terms.

The College is well known for the excellence of its Mathematics and Science programmes. Many of our previous students have realised their ambitions to be doctors, vets, physiotherapists and dentists. We have expanded in recent years with particular strengths in English and the Creative Arts. Our Film, Media, Photography and Theatre options are increasingly popular. New subjects like Environmental Science, Psychology, Art History and Ceramics are now offered. Students at the College are encouraged to follow their interests and enthusiasms and often change direction while with us, discovering what they really want to study at university as well as just securing the grades necessary to get them there.
