Walthamstow Hall Junior School, as the junior department of a former Girls’ Direct Grant grammar school, aims to lay the foundations of a sound academic education. It provides the element of continuity which makes the transition from primary to secondary schooling positive and exciting, rather than traumatic as it sometimes can be. Kindergarten offers flexible sessions from the age of 2½ years.
The Junior School benefits from its association with the Senior School (see entry in senior section) by sharing facilities such as swimming pool and theatre, and having specialist staff available in drama and music, where there is a wide range of instrumental teaching. It has its own attractive grounds and excellent modern facilities – new music centre, science laboratory, computing, art and design technology studios, netball and tennis courts, and cookery rooms. The curriculum broadens to include specialist subject teaching as the child develops: at the beginning, most of the time is spent with the form-mistress. We endeavour to keep a balance between the traditional and the modern. Basics such as tables and spelling are taught as well as creative project work and plenty of art, music, drama and games to develop all sides of the individual child's personality.
Courtesy and consideration for others, a concern for the less fortunate, and good relationships with staff are important and contribute to the cheerful and friendly atmosphere in the school.
We should be pleased to send details to interested parents, and to arrange a visit to see the school.
