Walthamstow Hall was founded in 1838 as a school for the daughters of missionaries. It moved to Sevenoaks, Kent in 1882, becoming the local girls’ grammar school, under the Direct Grant System. Walthamstow Hall is now a fully independent selective girls' day school offering an enriched grammar school curriculum.

Walthamstow Hall combines the best of experience with innovation. Respect for self and others, a strong sense of community and a pride that comes from sharing in a great tradition make Walthamstow Hall a dynamic environment in which individuals are known and valued.

Our curriculum reflects our belief in the importance of the individual: it is designed to offer unusual breadth, choice and flexibility. Lessons are delivered by highly qualified, enthusiastic specialists with a love for their subjects and a real commitment to pupils and the process of teaching and learning. From the beginning, teaching takes place in optimum-sized groups in attractive, purpose-built, modern classrooms grouped in dedicated department areas. Lessons are well-equipped with ICT and other resources and we enjoy exceptional facilities.

The school has been constructed around the needs of pupils. Every building on the campus, from the original Arts and Crafts-inspired building through to the new pool complex, has been purpose-built and designed for learning. The main building contains the vaulted dining hall and two floor Erasmus Centre for Languages and Humanities, refurbished in 2003. The Science Block (2004) has three floors of laboratories, each dedicated to each of the three Science disciplines. The Salmon Wing brings together the creative arts with classrooms for English, a floor of spacious Arts and Textiles studios and a well-stocked Library (1997) with panoramic views over Knole Park and the North Downs. The Ship Theatre is the focus for the performing arts, equipped to professional standard it is a perfect venue for music and drama. In 2007 we opened our state-of-the -art 25 metre, six lane swimming pool complex, a development that also saw the creation of the Mulberry Hall, an indoor sports hall. As well as our own pitches, tennis, netball and squash courts we also have easy access to the Holly Bush AstroTurf pitches for lessons and matches.

In 2009 a new suite of Mathematics rooms was completed. The next phases of buildings development will include the opening of the Downton Music Room later in 2009, the Elwes Drama Studio in 2010 and additional Design Technology space and Sports Hall.

The Creative Arts play a vital part in school life within the curriculum and as part of our enrichment provision. Our philosophy of encouraging every girl to get involved underpins everything from the Inter-House Music and Drama Festivals in which all girls perform, to the structure of our curriculum.

Every girl is encouraged to enjoy sport and personal fitness whatever her level of ability. Sport is well-represented on the curriculum and enjoys a high profile. The major team sports are lacrosse, netball, swimming, tennis and rounders. Girls also have lessons in gymnastics, hockey, athletics, badminton, volleyball and trampolining, whilst others enjoy judo, fencing and squash.

Learning is not confined to the classroom and many clubs, activities and trips offered are designed to engage a wide range of interests. Pupils travel abroad regularly and recently have been on school organised trips to Utah (for skiing), Mexico, Berlin, Rome and Washington. The local inter-schools Voluntary Service Unit, the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and Young Enterprise are well supported.

At Walthamstow Hall we recognise the importance of a Sixth Form environment that acknowledges the maturity of our students and prepares them for university and adulthood. The dedicated Sixth Form Centre gives sixth formers greater freedom with their own areas for study and relaxation including an ICT room, classrooms, kitchen and common rooms. Sixth Formers have a significant role to play in the running of the school: Head Girls, Prefects and House Captains are elected by the school and have special responsibilities, but all Sixth Form girls are expected to be school leaders. Sixth Form teaching is in small seminar-type groups in which all can learn to be assured and articulate students. A broad and flexible sixth form curriculum gives sixth formers incredible choice for their A level and Cambridge Pre-U studies.

The school is set between the North Downs and the Weald of Kent, on the edge of the town of Sevenoaks. Access is excellent to London and good use is made of the amenities within reach, with frequent field-trips, outings and visits to theatres, museums and art galleries.

Foundation Scholarships and Music Scholarships are available at age eleven. Academic, Music, Drama and Sports Scholarships are available at thirteen. Open Sixth Form Scholarships awarded annually. Bursaries are also available.

Walthamstow Hall is a registered charity founded in 1838 for the education of girls.

Alumnae - Our Old Girls' Association celebrated its centenary in 1999. Walthamstow Hall is a school that engenders affection and most girls join the Old Girls' Association when they leave, so that they can continue to keep in touch with and support the school and the friends they have made here.
