A Word from the Head

Walthamstow Hall was originally founded, in 1838, for the daughters of missionaries. After moving to Kent and accepting day-girls as well as boarders, it became the local Girls’ Direct Grant grammar school, reverting to independence in 1976.

It remains faithful to its Christian foundation and to the educational aims of a good grammar school, offering a sound, broad academic programme to able girls from all backgrounds, and achieving notable successes in public examinations and university entrance.

The range of extra-curricular activities is wide. A theatre complex has been built for music and drama: orchestras, choirs, school and house plays and public speaking are all vigorous. Sports on offer include squash (two fine courts), trampolining and judo as well as traditional team-games, athletics and swimming in our indoor pool. The local inter-schools Voluntary Service Unit, the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and Young Enterprise are well supported.

The Sixth-form Centre has seminar rooms, lecture hall, common rooms, fully-equipped kitchen and cloakrooms and is a base for our thriving Sixth Form. A new school library has been built, with a stock of over 12,000 books, computer stations and a computerised issue system. The Erasmus Centre for languages and humanities opened in Spring 2003. The new Science block opened in September 2004 with six new laboratories, prep rooms and a photographic dark room.

The school is set between the North Downs and the Weald of Kent, on the edge of the pleasant town of Sevenoaks, with historic Knole only minutes away. Access is excellent to London and good use is made of the amenities within reach, with frequent field-trips, outings and visits to theatres, museums and art galleries. There are usually two or three abroad each year, and exchanges and work experience in France and Germany.

The staff are highly qualified and committed to the school's standards of excellence, both personal and academic. We should be happy to send you a copy of our prospectus and we warmly encourage you to visit us.

Foundation Scholarships and Music Scholarships available at age eleven. Academic, Music and Drama Scholarships available at thirteen. Open Sixth Form Scholarships awarded annually. Bursaries available in cases of financial need.

Walthamstow Hall is a registered charity founded in 1838 for the education of girls.

Alumnae - Our Old Girls' Association celebrated its centenary in 1999. Walthamstow Hall is a school that engenders affection and most girls join the Old Girls' Association when they leave, so that they can continue to keep in touch with and support the school and the friends they have made here.
