A Word from the Head

Kirby Moor School is a special school for boys aged 11 – 18 years of age who have Social, Emotional, Behavioural and Learning Difficulties. Our school is located in a designated area of natural beauty in Cumbria, very near to Hadrian’s Wall, yet close enough to Carlisle which offers a range of social and sporting opportunities.

Kirby Moor School is a residential school offering 52 week placements for 7 boys and 38 week day school places for up to 8 boys. The home has recently been completely renovated to offer seven individual bedrooms all with en-suite, a games room and two comfy lounges. The family style dining room is located in the conservatory and food is cooked and prepared in a commercial kitchen. The grounds extend to over two acres with areas designated for outside sport. The school is separate from the home and consists of three classrooms, plus an ICT suite, an arts and crafts room and library. All classrooms have computers and the latest technology ‘SmartBoards’ to aid lesson delivery.

Education is provided by a dedicated team of six teachers, with experience of managing challenging learners, most have degrees and teaching qualifications and come with a wealth of life experiences. The curriculum is developed around the learner, with maximum use of individual learning plans. Our young people are encouraged and supported to develop an appetite for learning. We offer a range of academic qualifications ranging from Entry level to GCSEs which is also supported by a range of vocational accreditations in line with the 14-19 agenda. We have a qualified Information Advice and Guidance co-ordinator (Connexions)who from the start works with our young people to identify their strengths and develop a clear pathway to jobs or further education. They will also be offered work experience within our commercial kitchen and on the gardens to develop catering and horticultural skills and as they progress further training opportunities will be made available to them with local employers, training organisations and college day release where appropriate.

In addition to our education and caring professionals and in line with our multi disciplinary approach to encourage maximum personal development of the young people in our care, specialised therapeutic practitioners are at hand to assist further, subject to the agreement of the placing authority, the health authority and parents or guardians. Kirby Moor School has access to a full range of practitioners including:
* Child Psychologist
* Child & Adolescent Psychotherapist
* Confidential Counsellor
* Independent Listener
* School Nurse (employee of Kirby Moor School)
* Speech & Language Therapist
* Other visiting Specialists

Through education and the social development of our learners we strive to nurture and guide the young person on a journey of self-discovery that will provide him with the necessary academic tools to achieve his full potential.

Our curriculum enables the young person to acquire knowledge and skills relevant to adult life, employment and leisure in an ever changing world. We provide a living situation where each young person works hand-in-hand with fully qualified and experienced staff on their own personalised learning.

Kirby Moor School provides a unique relaxed approach in creating a happy, fun, safe and stable environment in which learning and social development are our priority.
