We are an IAPS school with a history dating back to 1784. A charitable trust was formed in 1964 when the school moved from Littlehampton to its present site set in 20 acres of parkland on the River Arun at Bury near Pulborough. We are fortunate to inhabit a site in the centre of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which affords our pupils extensive playing fields, woodland and all weather play areas. A purpose built teaching centre with state of the art Science and IT laboratories was opened recently. Our Junior Department with its dedicated staff provides a sure foundation in the early years, and our recently opened nursery is already thriving. The governors decided that Dorset House would open its doors to girls in the Reception Department in September 2006 and the first girls have arrived.
There are 100 boys in the main school and over 30 pupils in the Junior and Reception Departments. The school has remained deliberately small to preserve the feeling of an extended family, where friendliness, courtesy to others and a willingness to lend a hand are qualities valued by everyone. The school is run along boarding lines and the majority of boys choose to board before leaving us. Our excellent pastoral care provides an environment where individuals and individuality matter and where boys really can be boys.
We would like to share with you our happy, friendly, caring and welcoming safe-haven for children aged between 3 and 13. Based on Christian principles with a strong family ethos at its centre, Dorset House aims to find the best in every pupil and develop it to the full. We believe that our disciplined and caring environment encourages confident development and we are proud of our established reputation in music, sport, art and drama. Our academic aims at Dorset House are to meet individual educational needs and to excite pupils with a desire to learn. These aims are achieved through our stimulating environment, and our varied and balanced curriculum in which independent learning skills are fostered and boys are given the confidence to exceed their expectations.
We want our pupils to emerge as well-rounded young people eager to embrace all the world has to offer. We believe that our healthy, nurturing and ultimately challenging community prepares pupils for a demanding future. This brief description provides only a glimpse of the many things we do and we hope that you will come and see us for yourself. Or look at our 2004 ISI inspection report on isinspect.org.uk.
