Surrounded by mature woodland and gardens, unmatched by any other school in the area, St Mary's has been established in Hampstead since 1926. Founded by the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary as a Roman Catholic school for girls, the school today remains true to the ideals of the enlightened foundress of the IBVM, Mary Ward. In the early 17th century, Mary Ward said 'There is no such difference between men and women that women may not also do great things ...! She believed in the provision of a thoroughly grounded academic and spiritual education for girls as a foundation for an enriched and confident adulthood. St Mary's continues this tradition.
Since September 1992 the School has continued through a Charitable Trust managed by a majority of lay Trustees and Governors.
St Mary's aims to develop and fulfil the maximum potential of each child. This objective is fostered within a happy and caring environment which recognises the needs and importance of children of all abilities. Although high standards are expected, the emphasis is on individual achievement. As a Roman Catholic School, spiritual and moral principles are nurtured in a way that is reflected in daily life. It recognises and teaches the importance of worthwhile traditional values and self-discipline through respect and care for others.
While the School continues to set its own high standards, it complements these with integration of the best of the National Curriculum.
English, Mathematics and Science form the core subjects together with History, Geography, French, Religion, Computer Studies, Handwriting, Design and Technology, Physical Education, Drama, Art, Music and stimulating Project Work.
St Mary's anticipates and responds to changing educational needs and technology. A well stocked library, audio visual aids and a specialist computer department with the most up to date computers are available.
In addition, a wider range of activities is seen as essential to the rounded development of a healthy child. The School timetable permits extra curricular classes in Speech and Drama, Ballet and Tap Dancing, Gymnastics and Athletics, Needlework and Crafts. Individual and group instrumental tuition can be arranged for pianoforte, violin and recorder. There is a school choir and orchestra.
Merits are awarded for good work, courtesy, sporting achievement and other contributions to school life.
