125 years of tradition underlies the modern ethos of The Ryleys. A Preparatory School for children from 3 - 11 or 13, The Ryleys is situated in the lovely Cheshire village of Alderley Edge. The Ryleys has an excellent academic reputation, preparing its pupils for either the 11+ or 13+ examinations to the northwest’s leading grammar and public schools. Recently a total of 9 boys achieved 10 scholarship awards to both day and boarding schools (including 8 academic awards). Following a broad academic curriculum and taught by subject specialists, the children receive a thorough grounding in all National Curriculum subjects.
But while Ryleysians are expected to perform well in class, they are also expected to do much more in an education that stretches far beyond the boundaries of the classroom.
At The Ryleys, children have the chance to take up virtually any musical instrument, tutored by any one of nine highly-qualified visiting staff, or to sing in one of three choirs. There is an orchestra and various ensembles and groups. The school is highly regarded locally for the quality of its music. Every child in the school also participates in one of four annual dramatic productions, performing before parents to a marvellously high standard on our proscenium stage.
Games play an important part in the life of the school, with over twelve different sports, including football, rugby, cricket, hockey, netball, rounders and athletics to choose from, all coached to the highest standards and played on our brand new all-weather playing surface, playing fields, in the gym or on the Astroturf. The school participates very successfully in numerous regional and senior school tournaments.
Pupils can also take part in a range of trips abroad, including, recently, choir tours, sports tours and skiing trips to South Africa, Spain, France and Italy and cultural and language visits to France. Hikes and outdoor education are included in an exciting outdoor programme.
Two Information Technology suites and a thriving Design Technology department ensure that the children are fully equipped for the demands of the modern world while the standards achieved in Art are consistently high.
Each year an extensive fund-raising programme supports both local and national charities eg Francis House Children’s Hospice, Hope and Homes for Children, Comic Relief and Children in Need.
The standards of behaviour and manners at The Ryleys are high, as befits a school with a long and proud tradition, and children are encouraged to exhibit a thoughtful and considerate attitude to others.
The Ryleys is, above all else, a caring school and the school’s pastoral system ensures that each Ryleysian receives constant support and guidance as they discover and develop their individual talents in a happy and structured school environment.
