Lancaster Royal Grammar School was endowed in 1472 and is one of the oldest state funded schools in the country. Originally situated close to the Priory Church and Lancaster Castle, the school moved to its present site in 1851 when Queen Victoria granted the Royal title.
As a state day and boarding grammar school for boys, LRGS provides a first class academic education with an emphasis on all round development. Education is free to all pupils and parents have the option of boarding at a fraction of the fees payable at independent schools.
We are one of the UK's top state grammar schools for boys (Sunday Times) and every year 10-12% of our students progress to Oxbridge colleges. In addition to academic excellence we have a national reputation for sporting excellence, especially in Rugby and Cricket, and we offer a wide range of cultural activities. The atmosphere of the school is vibrant, inspiring – and fun! We are an outstanding alternative to the independent sector.
We are a successful state boarding school, rated as 'outstanding' across all categories by Ofsted. Boarding at Lancaster Royal Grammar School costs only about a third of the fees payable at independent schools and the warm, family atmosphere that characterises boarding at LRGS makes weekly boarding (Monday to Thursday night) very popular. Boarding parents who work long hours, sometimes staying away from home, have peace of mind knowing that their sons are happy, cared for and supported with their homework during the week.
It is a privilege to educate over 1000 pupils at the school, including 200 boarders and a thriving Sixth Form of 350 students. We challenge the brightest boys in the North West of England, along with boarders from further afield, to fulfil their potential. The pupils are the reason for our existence and the best advert for the school.
The values central to Lancaster Royal Grammar School are those of academic and extra-curricular excellence and opportunity, within a diverse and tolerant community: these form the best possible foundation for future life. We are particularly proud of the warmth of the relationships between pupils and staff, and of the quality of our pastoral care.
LRGS is a remarkable school and we encourage parents and boys to come and visit us and experience our happy and welcoming community. To arrange a visit call Tricia Heaton on 01524 580542 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
