At Colchester High School, We aim to allow all our pupils to realise their full potential by ensuring we offer a caring, friendly and calm environment in which learning can take place. Small class sizes and a stable and committed team of staff ensure a clear focus on the strengths of each child. We believe in offering a broad and balanced curriculum throughout the school. We feel that learning is not just academic but embraces a wide range of stimulating activities, both inside and outside the classroom.
We encourage good manners, consideration for others and a strong sense of social responsibility.
There is a flourishing nursery, with an ‘Outstanding’ OFSTED report, it takes children from 2 ½ years old until 4. Nursery children are automatically offered a place in the school’s Preparatory Department where high levels of literacy and numeracy are achieved. With small teaching sets, high levels of learning support and specialist teachers and good facilities, many pupils succeed with the selective test at 11+.
The highly popular Secondary Department takes pupils up to 16 years of age, with small teaching groups who benefit from new facilities for drama, food technology, ICT and music. In June 2008, 44% of all GCSEs taken by CHS pupils were awarded grades A*or A as compared to the National average of 21% and Colchester High School pupils achieved an average of 11 GCSE passes at grades A*- C, as a result the school was top in the county of the non-selective schools on the GCSE league tables
Pupils of all ages enjoy a wide variety of clubs and activities for Sport, with impressive achievements at regional and national levels. The outstanding facilities now include the Oxford Road Study Centre, a state-of-the-art centre providing a fully equipped food technology lab, a 24 seat ICT suite, GCSE textiles workroom and teaching rooms with interactive whiteboards.
