Head PhotoLoughborough Grammar School was founded in the centre of the town in 1495 and is one of the oldest and most academically successful schools in the country. In 1850 the School moved to its present spacious and attractive site in Burton Walks and is now part of a larger 'family' known as the Loughborough Endowed Schools situated in the same grounds, comprising the Grammar School, Loughborough High School for Girls and Fairfield Preparatory School, the co-educational prep school (ages 4-11), which prepares boys and girls for the Senior Schools. An ambitious building programme begun in the mid 1990s has seen the addition of an English School and Studio Theatre, a Modern Languages Centre and magnificent new Music School to serve all three schools which opened in September 2006. More recent developments include a state-of-the-art Chemistry Building (2009) and the renovation and extension of the Biology Building (2011) as part of an ongoing programme of improving the provision for single sciences: work on Physics will commence shortly, followed by the upgrading of the Mathematics building. The School is in general, therefore, exceptionally well-equipped, the playing fields being particularly outstanding. The School prides itself on having a family atmosphere, and very active house system. The Boarding Houses are an integral part of the School and cater for weekly and termly boarders. Academic results are consistently good or excellent, with 98% of sixth formers going on to degree courses each year, the majority to the best universities in the country, and around 15 to 20 to Oxford or Cambridge. Music and Drama are very strongly supported, most orchestras and productions being run jointly with the Girls' High School. There is also shared teaching with the High School in certain subjects in the Sixth Form. A wide range of sports and games is available, as well as numerous clubs and societies, including outdoor pursuits, a large CCF, Scouts and the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme. Loughborough views education in a traditional and wider sense of academic, social, spiritual and physical development.
