The Ela Murray International School is a non-profit, private, co-educational day school. We are a member school of the International Education Agency of Papua New Guinea (IEA). The governance of the school rests with a Board composed of parents and professional staff.
The school implements the IEA curriculum which is typical of that found in most western countries and reflects an outcomes based approach. The curriculum is available on the IEA Web Site at www.iea.ac.pg. Around 25% of pupils are from Papua New Guinea, and the rest are expatriates from all over the world.
The school has a strong commitment to child-centred education. Teachers are recruited from overseas and locally. All classrooms have a trained Classroom Assistant. Parents are encouraged to be part of their child's learning and are welcome to participate in class activities. An active parent group exists and they arrange social and fund raising activities for the school.
All classrooms are equipped with Interactive White Boards and computers. Classrooms are networked with internet access. All classrooms are air-conditioned.
Athletics and swimming carnivals are held each year. Children participate in inter-school sport. A strong after-school soccer and netball competition exists. After school activities are provided for students and include many educational, social and recreational activities.
Overseas recruited teachers live in accommodation provided by the school. Each teacher or teaching couple has their own residence.
The school is well resourced with specialist teachers and ample teaching materials. Staff also have access to the IEA Resource Centre. This provides quick access to a wide range of teacher resources and reference books. Experienced teaching staff on each site are also available to organise special education and gifted and talented education programs. The Board’s policy is to limit class sizes to twenty-five.
At the Murray site we have over 3oo pupils in primary school grades from Prep (Year One) to Grade Seven (Year 8). Our team of twelve classroom teachers and specialist teachers in Mandarin, PE, Visual Arts, Learning Support, Music and Library provide opportunities for individual student learning and development.
Site facilities include an oval, assembly area, well-equipped library, science and technology block, extensive range of teacher resources, and tennis, basketball and netball courts, and a 25 metre swimming pool.
At the Ela site, our modern, purpose-built Early Learning Arena offers an outstanding standard of early childhood education and child care for around 70 pupils.
